When I think about health, I think about more than just the absence of illness. I think about well-being in every sense - physical, mental, and emotional. But for many in our community, especially those facing financial challenges, accessing this kind of holistic health can feel out of reach. That’s why I’m so passionate about the work happening right here in La Grande, where we are pioneering inclusive health practices that truly aim to serve everyone.
Health equity is not just a buzzword. It’s a commitment. A promise that no matter your background, income, or circumstances, you deserve the same chance to thrive. And together, we can make that promise a reality.
Embracing Inclusive Health Practices in Our Community
Inclusive health practices mean creating spaces and systems where everyone feels seen, heard, and cared for. It’s about breaking down barriers that prevent people from getting the care they need. In La Grande, this looks like:
Offering sliding scale fees or free services for those who can’t afford traditional healthcare costs.
Providing culturally sensitive care that respects diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Ensuring transportation and language support so no one is left behind.
Creating partnerships between local organizations to address social determinants of health like housing, food security, and education.
I’ve seen firsthand how these efforts transform lives. When people feel supported, they are more likely to seek care early, follow treatment plans, and engage in healthy behaviors. It’s a ripple effect that benefits the whole community.

The Heart of Health Equity: What It Means for Us
Health equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. But what does that really look like in practice? It means recognizing that some people face greater obstacles due to economic hardship, discrimination, or lack of resources. It means actively working to remove those obstacles.
In La Grande, this means:
Expanding access to mental health services for those who might otherwise go without.
Supporting programs that provide nutritious food to families in need.
Offering educational workshops on managing chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease.
Advocating for policies that improve healthcare affordability and quality.
By focusing on these areas, we’re not just treating symptoms. We’re addressing root causes. We’re building a foundation where health is a right, not a privilege.

How We Can All Support Health Equity for All La Grande
You might wonder, “What can I do to help?” The truth is, every one of us has a role to play. Here are some practical ways to get involved:
Volunteer with local organizations like The Angel Project, which is dedicated to breaking down financial barriers to health and wellness in Union County.
Advocate for policies that increase funding for community health programs and affordable care.
Educate yourself and others about the social factors that impact health, such as housing, education, and food access.
Support local businesses and initiatives that prioritize inclusive health practices.
Listen and amplify voices from marginalized communities to ensure their needs are met.
By taking these steps, we contribute to a healthier, more supported community where everyone has the chance to flourish.
Looking Ahead: Building a Healthier Future Together
The journey toward health equity is ongoing. It requires patience, persistence, and a lot of heart. But I believe in the power of community - in our ability to come together, to listen, and to act with compassion.
La Grande is already making strides. The Angel Project leading the way, we are creating a model that others can follow. A model where health equity for all La Grande is not just an ideal, but a lived reality.
Let’s keep moving forward - together. Because when we invest in each other’s health, we invest in a brighter, stronger future for all.
