When I think about health, I don’t just picture doctors and hospitals. Health is so much more than that. It’s about the places we live, the food we eat, the jobs we have, and the support we receive from our communities. In Oregon, especially in places like Union County, these factors play a huge role in shaping our well-being. Today, I want to walk with you through the social determinants of health in Oregon and explore how they impact our lives - and what we can do to create a healthier future together.
Exploring Oregon Health Determinants: What Shapes Our Well-Being?
Oregon is a beautiful state with diverse landscapes and communities. But beneath the surface, many people face challenges that affect their health in ways we might not immediately see. These challenges are what experts call social determinants of health. They include things like access to safe housing, nutritious food, education, and economic opportunities.
For example, in Union County, some families struggle to afford healthy groceries or reliable transportation to medical appointments. Others may live in neighborhoods where parks and safe walking paths are scarce. These conditions create barriers that make it harder to stay healthy.
Understanding these determinants helps us see the bigger picture. It’s not just about individual choices; it’s about the environment and systems that surround us. When we recognize this, we can start to address the root causes of health disparities and work toward solutions that benefit everyone.

What are the 5 Key Social Determinants of Health?
To make sense of it all, let’s break down the five key social determinants of health that influence our lives the most:
Economic Stability
This includes employment, income, and financial security. When people have steady jobs and enough money, they can afford healthcare, healthy food, and safe housing. Without this stability, stress and health problems often increase.
Education Access and Quality
Education opens doors to better jobs and healthier lifestyles. Schools that provide quality education and resources help children and adults alike build a foundation for good health.
Healthcare Access and Quality
Having access to affordable, quality healthcare is essential. This means not only medical services but also preventive care, mental health support, and health education.
Neighborhood and Built Environment
Safe housing, clean water, parks, and transportation options all contribute to health. Living in a supportive environment encourages physical activity and reduces exposure to harmful conditions.
Social and Community Context
Strong social networks and community support can improve mental health and provide resources during tough times. Feeling connected and supported makes a real difference.
Each of these areas is interconnected. For example, a lack of economic stability can limit access to quality education and healthcare, creating a cycle that’s hard to break.
How Social Determinants Affect Health in Union County
Living in Union County, I’ve seen firsthand how these social determinants play out. Many families face financial barriers that make it difficult to prioritize health. When you’re worried about paying rent or putting food on the table, scheduling a doctor’s visit might feel like a luxury.
Transportation is another challenge. Without reliable public transit, getting to medical appointments or grocery stores can be a real struggle. This can lead to missed care and poor nutrition.
But it’s not just about obstacles. There’s also incredible strength in our community. Local organizations, like The Angel Project, are stepping up to break down these barriers. They provide resources and support to help people access the care and services they need.
By focusing on these social determinants, we can create targeted solutions that improve health outcomes. For example:
Expanding affordable housing options to reduce overcrowding and stress
Increasing access to fresh, affordable food through community gardens and farmers markets
Offering transportation assistance for medical visits
Providing education and job training programs to boost economic stability
These actions don’t just improve individual health; they strengthen the entire community.

Taking Action: How We Can Support Health Equity in Our Community
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when thinking about all the factors that influence health. But every small step counts. Here are some ways we can all contribute to a healthier Union County:
Get involved locally. Volunteer with organizations that address social determinants, like food banks, housing initiatives, or health outreach programs.
Advocate for policies that support health equity. This could mean supporting affordable housing projects or improved public transportation.
Educate ourselves and others. Understanding the social determinants helps us see beyond stereotypes and build empathy.
Support local businesses and farmers. This strengthens the local economy and improves access to fresh food.
Create supportive networks. Check in on neighbors, share resources, and build community connections.
Together, these actions create a ripple effect. When we lift each other up, we build a foundation for lasting health and wellness.
Embracing Hope and Healing Through Community
Reflecting on the social determinants of health in Oregon reminds me that health is truly a shared journey. It’s about more than just individual choices - it’s about the community we build and the support we offer one another.
I believe in the power of connection and compassion. When we come together to address the challenges faced by Union County residents, especially those facing financial barriers, we create a space where everyone can thrive.
